"CONNECTING OUR HERITAGE WITH YOUR FUTURE"

Officially created in 1853, Pickens County was named for General Andrew Pickens, and Jasper was named for Sergeant William Jasper, both of whom were Revolutionary War heros. Indians first inhabited the area, mining both marble and quartz at least 5,000 years ago.
By the early 1900s, the marble quarries were in operation under the direction of Colonel Sam Tate. From Henry Fitzimmons' incredible find of marble through Colonel Tate's reign and on to the present, marble continues to play an important role in the economic profile of the county.
Comprised of hills, valleys, streams and hollows, a thread of small close-knit communities connects Pickens County. Each with their own identifiable story, the towns of Talking Rock, Tate, Marble Hill, Hinton, Blaine, Ludville and Nelson all join with Jasper, county seat.
